Teeth Whitening Q & A

Why are my teeth discolored?

The natural aging process is the leading cause of tooth discoloration. Over the years, your bright white tooth enamel breaks down and wears away revealing the yellow dentin underneath.

Other factors that cause your teeth to lose their pearly white luster include:

  • Using tobacco
  • Drinking dark beverages with tannins like red wine and coffee
  • Eating tomato-based foods like curries or pasta sauces
  • Oral trauma
  • Taking a medication with tetracycline

Poor oral hygiene can also play a role. If you want to reduce the risk of stains and build-up, it’s important to brush twice daily and floss regularly.

What is teeth whitening?

Teeth whitening is a cosmetic dentistry technique that uses bleaching solutions to eliminate stains and discoloration. There are dozens of teeth whitening systems available, but most use carbamide peroxide to whiten the teeth. Carbamide peroxide is a harmless chemical that provides long-lasting, repeatable results.

What types of whitening are offered at our dental office?

Dr. Pavlushkin and her team offer several types of teeth whitening in Old Bridge, NJ, including:

In-office teeth whitening

In-office whitening is so effective, it can make your teeth up to eight* shades brighter in just one treatment. During in-office whitening, Dr. Pavlushkin covers your gums and tongue with a protective rubber dam. She then applies a whitening solution to each of your teeth.

The whitening solution penetrates your enamel, beginning an oxidation process. The process transforms the molecules in your teeth to reflect less light. That makes them appear colorless, restoring your smile to a Hollywood-worthy condition.

Take-home whitening trays

If you don’t have time for an in-office whitening treatment, consider take-home whitening trays. Prior to treatment, Dr. Pavlushkin takes impressions of your mouth and sends them to a dental lab. The lab creates two custom mouthpieces that fit your teeth perfectly.

Once you receive the mouthpieces, Dr. Pavlushkin gives you a bottle of bleaching solution and a syringe. You transfer the bleaching solution to each mouthpiece with the syringe and wear them for several hours a day, whenever is most convenient.

Does teeth whitening provide permanent results?

The results of teeth whitening aren’t permanent, but they last an average of four to six months. To ensure your teeth remain bright and white, brush twice daily, floss regularly, and visit Dr. Pavlushkin every six months for an oral exam and professional teeth cleaning.
