Help! My Teeth are Yellow

When your teeth lose their whiteness or start to appear yellow, you can become self-conscious and less inclined to show off your smile. Professional teeth whitening can change that for you.

Our team at Empire Dental Group in Old Bridge, New Jersey, led by Alla Pavlushkin, DDS, and Steven Reff, DDS, has the expertise and experience to lift the brightness of your teeth with our professional treatments.

Let’s first look at what can make your teeth turn yellow.

How teeth can lose their luster

Did you know you can play an active role in helping your teeth sustain their whiteness? Poor habits can cause the color of your teeth to appear dull or yellow.

Causing factors include:

Diet

Drinks and food can affect the color of your teeth. Beverages that can stain your teeth include coffee, sodas, and red wine. Foods that cause discoloration include berries, chocolate, and meals with red or dark sauces.

Poor oral hygiene

We recommend that you brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss daily. If you ignore the basic oral hygiene practices, your teeth can change in color.

Smoking

Smoking is one of the main reasons your teeth get yellow. If you quit smoking, you become less at risk for teeth discoloration.

In addition to personal habits leading to yellowing teeth, taking certain medications can also contribute to discoloration. For example, prescription drugs for conditions, such as high blood pressure or asthma, can cause your teeth to appear yellow or stained. Chemotherapy can contribute to the change in your teeth’s color, too.

How teeth whitening works

Our teeth whitening system works in two ways —- in-office and at-home. Both options provide professional-grade solutions to give you the results you want.

For your in-office visit, we cover your gums and tongue and then apply a teeth whitening gel that penetrates your enamel. We keep you comfortable while your teeth lift up to eight shades, and the process takes less than an hour.

If you’d rather whiten your teeth on your own time, we provide customized mouthpieces for your top and bottom teeth made from an impression we take of your mouth. We also supply you with syringes containing our professional bleaching solution.

Simply squirt the recommended amounts of gel into your mouthpieces and wear them for a few hours a day. The at-home option can take up to two weeks before your teeth reach their whitest.

How to keep my teeth white

To maintain the whiteness of your new smile, continue your good oral hygiene practices, and stay away from habits that can cause your teeth to become discolored again.

Your results should naturally last at least 4-6 months or longer if you follow our guidelines for keeping your teeth white.
